WE ARE PART OF THE COMENIUS PROJECT THE RADIO ASTRONOMY STATION IN MEDICINA (BOLOGNA) A slice of the “Comenius cake” was eaten in Italy, precisely in our region, Emilia-Romagna. It was a great experience because it is not common in our daily life to meet people from other countries. The students from our school hosted French and Hungarian boys and girls for four days. During these days we had the opportunity to visit some of the most well-known places in Romagna linked to the environmental issues we have dealt with in our project. We talked about the production of bricks in the former Galotti kiln in Bologna where, in the past, millions of bricks were made every year. We also visited a company that makes electric cars and some beautiful places like Bologna, the Basilica of S. Apollinare in Classe near Ravenna, the Canal Harbour in Cesenatico, the “Wellness Fair” in Forlì and enjoyed the wonderful view of its countryside. We also had lunch at a McDonald’s restaurant, which was a moment of extraordinary happiness. One of the most interesting visits was to the radio astronomy station in Medicina, near Bologna. It is the biggest in Europe and the world’s second biggest station after the one in Arecibo, Puertorico. We found this visit very original. The station covers an area of 30,000 square meters: it is divided into two parts with the ‘Northern Cross’ radio telescope and a dish antenna. In the Northern Cross there are steel cables for receiving low frequency waves, while the dish antenna receives high frequency waves bouncing into a “microphone” situated in the focus of the dish antenna. The dish is made of aluminum and it has a radius of about 32 meters, while the Northern Cross, where are spread about a thousand kilometers of steel cables, has a length of 564 meters in the east-west direction and of 640 meters in the north-south direction. Of particular interest was the fact that this radio astronomy station takes part in SETI (Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence), a search for intelligence outside the earth, but for now this activity hasn’t given the expected results. The guide told us that a radio astronomy station with a radius of 64 meters is under construction in Sicily and another station in Cagliari (Sardinia). During the days of the Comenius project we learned not only technical notions but also new customs and lifestyles and how to communicate with people who speak different languages. It was an exciting experience that we lived with a lot of enthusiasm. In the future we would like to participate in other cultural exchanges among different countries in order to promote mutual understanding of other peoples’ customs and traditions. Giuseppe Tabanelli - Simone Diversi - Marco Randi - Francesco Baldini - Marco Scardovi - Marco Pattuelli A FANTASTIC WEEK INTERNATIONAL HERITAGE MUSEUM ‘GALOTTI’ - BOLOGNA During the week devoted to Comenius, a European exchange project which aims at dealing with the issue of sustainable energy, some of us hosted French and Hungarian students. At the beginning it was not easy because of social and cultural differences between our countries, but we managed to get to know each other better by making the best use of our knowledge of English and trying to overcome our shyness and fears. In any case, this experience has helped us to come to a better understanding of the habits and customs of one another and to accept differences. YOUNG PEOPLE TOWARDS THE FUTURE The Comenius project, which began a few years ago, has enabled us, this year, to do an exchange between some European countries: Italy, France and Hungary. During the stay of our European partners in our country, we had the opportunity to visit some factories, historical sites and a fair.
The students of our primary school won a pecuniary assistance from ’Comenius School Co-operation’application to organize a journey to France. The students were:Kovács Dóra,Bagoly Fanni,Lipcsei Laura, Páll Flóra,Fodor Lilla,Teremi Nikolett from 6th class,Jakab Szabolcs from 7th class and Matéz Zsuzsanna,Csordás Brigitta,Tóth Gábor from 8th class.Their companions were:Egri Józsefné and Botáné Kozma Zsuzsanna teachers. Continuatione the Comenius project we went to visit to our French partner. From Italy 10 boys and 2 teachers, from us 7 pupils and 2 teachers went to Ambert in the south of France.
This was the first national project at our school. It was very exciting when I started this. When I knew that our project is winI was very happy. We agreed a meeting with the national partner sin France, where we determined the exercises for the 2 years, which partner what what will have to do from these exercises.
